Climate and Timing Questions
Can I do drywall work in summer in Las Vegas?
Yes, but only with climate control running in the space. In an un-air-conditioned house or garage in June, July, or August, joint compound will surface-crack within two to three hours of application. The outer layer dries before the interior cures, and you get splits that require re-taping. Run a window unit or portable AC to keep the space below 80°F. October through April, you can generally work without climate control if you're doing morning work and keeping the space ventilated.
How long does joint compound take to dry in Las Vegas?
In summer with AC running (75-80°F, 30-40% humidity), expect 8-12 hours for a standard coat. Without climate control in summer, surface drying happens in 1-2 hours but that's not full curing - it's just the dangerous skinning stage that leads to cracking. In winter, when Las Vegas temperatures are in the 50s and 60s, drying times are closer to what you'd expect in the Midwest: 12-24 hours per coat depending on thickness.
Should I use hot mud in Las Vegas?
Setting-type compound (hot mud) is useful for filling larger voids and repairs, but it's generally not preferred for taping coats in Las Vegas's dry summer conditions. Standard all-purpose compound gives you more working time and better control. Hot mud 20 and 45 (the faster-setting varieties) can set up before you've finished working the seam in hot weather. If you use setting compound in Las Vegas summer, stick to hot mud 90 or even 120 to give yourself enough time to work.
Cracks and Common Repairs
Why do I keep getting cracks at the corners of my windows?
Corner cracking at window and door openings is the most common drywall complaint in Las Vegas. It's caused by thermal cycling. The wall framing expands and contracts daily with the extreme desert temperature swings, and stress concentrates at the corners of rigid openings like windows. The cracks usually run diagonally from the corners. They're cosmetic, not structural. Repair: widen the crack slightly with a knife to create clean edges, fill with setting compound, let cure fully, then finish with all-purpose. Apply flexible paintable caulk at the actual window or door frame junction rather than compound.
I have screw pops all along one wall. What's going on?
Screw pops in rows following stud lines are a thermal cycling symptom. The framing moves seasonally and the screws push outward. This is especially common in south and west-facing walls that get the most sun exposure. Fix: drive a new screw 2 inches above and below each pop, seat the popped screw deeper, fill the depressions with compound, and feather smooth. They may recur over years. Annual touch-up is easier than trying to eliminate the root cause, which is the climate.
Can I skip priming before painting a patched area?
No. This matters more in Las Vegas than in humid climates. The desert air and porous compounds create extreme flashing (dull spots where repairs absorb paint differently than the surrounding wall) if you paint without priming patched areas. Use a shellac-based spot primer or PVA on the repair before painting. Without it, you can see the patch in any kind of raking light no matter how many coats of paint you apply.
Texture Questions
What texture is most common in Las Vegas homes?
Knockdown is the dominant texture in Las Vegas residential construction, particularly homes built between 1985 and 2005. Orange peel is the second most common. Smooth walls (Level 5 finish) are rare except in high-end or custom construction. If you're patching a Las Vegas home and need to match texture, assume knockdown unless you can verify otherwise by looking closely at the surface pattern. Knockdown has irregular, flattened splatter shapes. Orange peel looks like the skin of the fruit: small, rounded bumps.
How do I match knockdown texture on a patch?
Rent a hopper gun with a 4-5" nozzle from a Las Vegas tool rental shop, mix compound to a consistency slightly thinner than peanut butter, and practice the spray pattern on cardboard before touching the wall. Distance from wall and air pressure both affect the splatter size. Las Vegas's dry air means the splatter dries faster than in humid climates, so you have less time to knock it down with a drywall knife before it sets. Work in small sections and have your knockdown knife ready immediately after spraying.
Water Damage Questions
My house got water in it during a monsoon storm. How fast do I need to act?
Fast. Within 24-48 hours. Las Vegas's dry air does help with evaporation, but trapped water behind or inside drywall won't dry by evaporation alone. Standard drywall paper facing becomes a mold growth medium if it stays wet for more than 48-72 hours, even in a dry climate. Get fans and dehumidifiers running immediately. If the drywall is saturated (soft to the touch or sounds hollow), it usually needs to come out. If it's damp but still firm, aggressive drying sometimes saves it. A moisture meter is a worthwhile tool for assessing whether material can stay or has to go.
Do I need permits to replace water-damaged drywall?
For simple drywall replacement after water damage, Clark County and the City of Las Vegas generally don't require permits if you're not touching structural elements, electrical, or plumbing. If the water damage was severe enough to affect framing, insulation, or other systems, permits may be needed depending on scope. When in doubt, call Clark County Building Department at (702) 455-3000. Getting it wrong costs more than asking first.
