Im about to do my first ever drywall project (patching some holes in our living room before we paint). Went to home depot today and there are like 15 different types of joint compound and i just stood there confused. Pre-mixed vs powder? Lightweight vs all purpose? Somebody please just tell me what to buy lol. The holes are various sizes, biggest one is maybe 6 inches from where we removed a wall mount TV bracket.

Pre-mixed all purpose. Green lid bucket. Thats it. Dont overthink it. The pre-mixed stuff is ready to go right out of the bucket, you dont have to mess with mixing powder and water ratios. All purpose means it works for every step - embedding tape, filling, finishing coats. One product does everything you need for patching holes.
ok green lid got it. do i need the big bucket or is there a smaller size? i really just have like 4 holes to patch
they sell pint and quart sized containers, look for the small tubs near the patching supplies. a quart should be more than enough for 4 holes. the big bucket will dry out before you use it all
agree with the all purpose recommendation. One thing tho - if you want things to go faster you could use setting compound (the powder stuff) for your first coat. its called hot mud and it sets in like 45 minutes instead of waiting overnight. but honestly for a first timer just stick with premixed. less variables to deal with. the powder stuff has a learning curve because once you mix it the clock is ticking
I did basically the same project last year as my first drywall thing ever. Bought a small tub of the DAP brand premixed from Lowes and it worked great. For a 6 inch hole youll also need a patch kit - they sell these mesh patches with adhesive backing that stick right over the hole and then you mud over them. way easier than cutting drywall pieces. i think i spent maybe $18 total on supplies for 5 holes and had mud left over
